Zero to landfill

What does zero waste to landfill mean?

As the name suggests, Zero Waste to Landfill is a philosophy of reducing the amount of waste that ends up in landfill and ultimately improving environmental health. Although it suggests absolutely nothing goes to landfill, at this point it’s unfortunately not possible for every waste item to avoid a landfill, but the main goal is that we aim toward significantly reducing the amount of waste that ends up there, with at least 99% of items we collect being diverted away from landfill.

Why is Zero Waste to Landfill Important?

Landfill has long been used as a disposal method, but it is not a sustainable solution due to its negative environmental effects in terms of pollution, and reduced available space for landfill, therefore avoiding using landfill has a positive environmental impact.

Climate change, and action against it, has become a political issue with legal bodies often setting regulations and tightening controls on processes including waste management.  We ensure our business stays compliant to the latest legislation as well as helping the environment by following legislation leading towards better waste management and reduced landfill reliance.

At Our House Clearance, by managing items we remove from properties more effectively, we can also benefit from cost savings including waste management and material turnovers. Those savings in turn can be passed onto our customers.

How we Achieve Zero Waste to Landfill

Reuse

We remove a lot of furniture, appliances, clothing and small items from properties when we clear them. A lot of the time, the items we remove are in a good, reusable condition, so we find ways of rehoming them by either donating to charity so that they can be used to help others in need or by re-selling.

Recycling

Anything that can’t be reused will be recycled where possible. Using our waste carriers licence we bring everything back to our property and we go about sorting it. Once everything is sorted, we then take them to our local recycling centre for disposal.

Non-Recycling

Unfortunately, whilst we can still dispose of non-recyclable items at recycling centres, they are put into non-recyclables containers.

· Bubble Wrap

· Carpets, underlay, vinyl, lino

· CDs, DVD, Records, Video Cassettes, Audio Casettes

· Fibreglass and polystyrene

· Flat Glass (Windows, shower screens etc)

· Mattresses

· Plastic coat hangers

· Plastic film

· Shiny/foil type paper (wrapping paper)

· Soil & turf

· Sofas, armchairs and other upholstered items

· Used/stripped wallpaper

· Household waste (things that would normally end up in your black bin)

Whilst these are considered non recyclable, they will only go to recycling centres if they are unable to be donated or reused. You would be surprised how much can be!
